How its Used
Revenue per employee is used in the lodging, recreational establishments, local transportation services, retail trade, and services to calculate visitor-induced employment.
How to Estimate it or Where to Get It
Default values are provided for your state but if you want to look these up, here is how. The best source for these data is the various US Census of retail trade, services, and transportation. Many of these data are also available in the US Statistical Abstract, or the from the Internet at www.census.gov. These sources, however, are frequently for larger geographic areas than desirable and lag by several years. Adjustments are advisable to incorporate local conditions and to adjust for inflation over the intervening years.

Total value added divided by total dollars of output, in each industries.
How its Used
These data are used to estimate how much of the local spending is retained in the community to be available for respending by subsequent recipients of the income produced.
How to Estimate it or Where to Get It
Default values are provided for your state but if you want to look these up, here is how. It is suggested that payroll be used as a starting point for value added and revenues as a measure of output. These are available in County Business Patterns, and in the various Census, i.e., Censuses of Retail, Transportation, and Services, respectively. They may also be available on the Internet at www.census.gov. You may want to consider adjusting the value added per dollar of output figure based upon local conditions. Payroll would be considered a lower limit, if the jurisdictional area is large enough to encompass most of the employment, i.e., you might want to adjust it upward if most of the employees live in the jurisdiction along with the owners and suppliers of other inputs to their processes. Conversely, you might want to adjust it downward if , for example in retail, most of the ownership lives outside the area (e.g., the Wal Mart), and many of the employees live outside the jurisdiction.

Data on revenues and establishments can also be found in the various censuses or on the internet at www.census.gov. Adjustments to incorporate data or insights in local patterns would improve accuracy. Inflation adjustments are also advisable.
